Communicating in the Immediate Aftermath of a Nuclear Detonation

The Nuclear Detonation Preparedness: Communicating in the Immediate Aftermath document shares information about how to communicate to the public in the first 72 hours following a nuclear detonation. This document contains pre-scripted messages that responders can release immediately following nuclear detonation, including information about immediate protective actions, decontamination, sheltering, evacuating, medical care, and more. • Shelley Laver is the director of the Center for Radiation Information and Outreach, Radiation Protection Division for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In this role, Laver serves as a communications leader, with more than 30 years of crisis and risk communications experience, on matters related to radiation protection, including standards, regulations, and emergency response. Before joining the EPA, Laver previously served as the communications lead with the National Nuclear Security Administration and the U.S. Air Force
• Ellen Wang is a multimedia communications specialist for EPA’s Office of Radiation and Indoor Air. In this position, Wang works within the Center for Radiation Information and Outreach and is a certified public information officer. Wang helped in facilitating the development of the Nuclear Detonation Preparedness: Communicating in the Immediate Aftermath document and is a current member of EPA’s Radiological Emergency Response Team.
